What impact does this have on Champcar/OWRS if they sell Cosworth? What will Ford do now in motorsports? Does the IRL have a chance for Ford to come on board?

IMHO, I think this pretty much eliminates Ford from coming to the IRL anytime soon. I do think the Chevy-Cosworth engine deal would be fairly safe since I believe they were dealing directly with Cosworth and not Ford.Originally posted by irlrules98

Hmmm...surprised they're not going with the full-on Ford program that Autosport reported on September 9th...

They said in the press release that branding the F1 team Ford did not provide any benefit to the company.
So Ford is out of World Rally except for Europe...
out of F1 worldwide...
In Champcar until Cosworth is sold...
That leaves full support of NASCAR in the US, some support of short track USAC midgets and sprinters because of common technology to NASCAR engines. Ford of Australia does the sedan racing thing there. I think that's it.
Could SVT do an IRL enging themselves? Could Ford hire someone to do one for them? Do they want to be involved in the IRL now? Or are the waiting to see what shakes out?
Time will tell.
I'm guessing that Ford would be very happy to be in just one major series--NASCAR.
And Pro Stock and John Force Racing in drag racing...Originally posted by irlrules98

Sad. Very sad.
There would not even be a Ford without racing.
Now for me at least, without racing there is no Ford. Have you guys seen the new Ford 500? What a joke! About their new minivan Car and Driver said "Ford lays down a bunt".
This is a company headed in the wrong direction.
Ford won’t be coming to the IRL as long as the cost to play includes not only developing a good engine, but subsidizing two or three teams. That’s the problem with Chevy right now. Their engine is just fine, but they don’t invest mega bucks into the teams, so their results suffer. It’s one of the real downsides of having Toyota and Honda tossing around large amounts of yen, so they drive out more budget conscience companies out of the market.
Folks, I'm having trouble remembering about this right now, wasn't the combining of Yates and Roush engine development efforts an alternative to a much larger reduction in support?Originally posted by Cant_hit_apex

The sale of Cosworth has just as much affect on the IRL as it does in ChampCar. Both the IRL and ChampCar programs for Cosworth are nothing but gravy trains, making money doing R&D and rebuilds. In the IRL, its paid for by Chevy, in ChampCar, its paid for by the series. I just hope somebody picks it up (or Ford spins it off on its own) and can keep both of these programs going. Logically, there is no reason for them not to, as both are money makers for Cosworth. But in times of turmoil... you never know. Especially if the VW rumors are true....
Especially when they go to Canada (where NASCAR is already the most popular motorsport and to Mexico where it will quickly become El Grande!)Originally posted by Cant_hit_apex

Maybe TG will buy Cosworth!!!
Actually heard this on the business report on newradio this morning. I'm recalling Edsel Ford on Wind Tunnel a while back wasn't he saying how Ford wanted to stay in F-1 but maybe not as Jaguar brand. Which wouldn't seem to be the case when letting the team go. And would cast doubt on Edsel's knowledge of what could or won't happen in Ford's racing future.
"You can't arrest those guys, they're folk heroes"
"They're criminals"
"Well most folk heroes started out as criminals"
You never know, that could have been the plan (that was months ago, afterall)... but they decided to axe it instead. Its also possible that the Cosworth engines will remain Ford badged... leading to a couple teams with Ford engines, just no Ford factory team.
I don't think Edsel actually said that. Despain hinted at that and tried to get him to respond, but he played it pretty coy. I wonder what he was supposed to say? Ehhh Dave, no actually we've decided to can the whole deal and I'm here on Windtunnel to let everybody know - Is that really the way you all think they wanted to break the news?Actually heard this on the business report on newradio this morning. FWIW, I have a hard time believing Edsel dosen't know all about Ford's racing plans. He's on the BOD after all.

GM is in just as bad a fiscal situation as Ford, though... I cant really see them buying Cosworth.
hmmmmmmm
The transformation is complete. The Indy 500 is the only IndyCar race that matters.
