October 31, 1999: RIP Greg Moore

Hard to believe that this Sunday will be 5 years since we lost one of the most promising drivers in Open wheel, Greg Moore. I still have vivid memories of watching the wreck on TV, and hearing the words from the doctor, that Greg had not survived.

Greg was a true champion and had great potential. He was going to be driving for Penske in 2000. His future looked great. Who knows, he may have been the winner of the Indy 500 and not Helio.

All of racing lost that Sunday at Fontana. We will miss you Greg and #99.
After years of fighting and a split, guess what, we are all IndyCar

October will always be a sad racing month for me. RIP Greg and Dan. You both were great and we miss you.

I know hard rock isn't the most insightful genre of music out there, but this song from The Offspring really says it for a lot of us:

    Maybe in another life
    I could find you there
    Pulled away before your time
    I can't deal it's so unfair

    And it feels
    And it feels like
    Heaven's so far away
    And it feels
    Yeah it feels like
    The world has grown cold
    Now that you've gone away

    Leaving flowers on your grave
    Show that I still care
But black roses and Hail Mary's
Can't bring back what's taken from me
    I reach to the sky
    And call out your name
    And if I could trade
    I would

    And it feels
    And it feels like
    Heaven's so far away
    And it stings
    Yeah it stings now
    The world is so cold
    Now that you've gone away

    The Offspring, "Gone Away"

    Can't believe it's been 5 years.

I find it eerie that 10/31 will be on a Sunday, just like it was 5 years ago.
    - Make a note of the word 'Gobbly-gook'. I like it and I want to use it more often in conversation.
    --Yes, sir.

He was going to Penske, so it would have happened.

He was McLaren bound. If he was still alive I doubt he'd be racing in the USA more than once a year.

Race with the angels, Greg. Godspeed

    "See you at the Front"

    Some Comments from that day:

"Today I lost one of the best friends I ever had in Greg Moore. In the last couple of years, ever since I've known him, we shared a lot of good times together. He was the guy I competed the hardest with on the track, and he was the guy that I had the most fun with away from the track. The guy was going to be a champion, many, many times over. He was my friend. With what 's happened, nothing else matters." -Dario Franchitti

"Today was a disappointing day for everybody. The loss of Greg is a hard thing to try and stomach. But I've talked to a lot of drivers now and we all just remember Greg on the grid today. He was sitting there in his car with a gimp hand, smiling and ready for the race; ready to go out there and try to win it. His spirit was that way. He wouldn't give up a chance to get in the car, even if his leg was hanging off. That's how I want to remember him. Not seeing the accident. But remembering all of the good times that we had. He was a guy who always had a smile on his face. He was always upbeat and always in a good mood. He had a great spirit and I hope that continues on in this sport." -Paul Tracy

"I will remember Greg as a great gentleman, great friend and a fantastic racecar driver." "It's so hard. Greg was such a good friend of ours. We've been racing for a while and shared so many good moments on and off the track." -Adrian Fernandez

"He's out there in the sky. These are messages that God sent to us. I'm so sad. There's no words, there is nothing. There is nothing...no satisfaction would pay this back. We need to understand why things happen. Now my prayers are with Ric and all of Greg's family. There is no word. You just have to understand why things happen. And don't accept them." -Max Papis

"Definitley Greg will be missed a lot everywhere. Not only inside the track but outside the track and hanging out with us." -Christian Fittipaldi

"I'm really sad about what happened to Greg. I think he was a great guy. I'm really sorry for his family and friends. I could say he was one of the nicer guys around here. It's a really big shame. It's a big loss for CART and for everyone." -Juan Montoya

"This one hits home. Greg Moore was a good friend of mine. This accident is really going to make me think about what I'm doing with my career. We've lost two great guys in the last couple of months, and that's not good. I feel so sad for Greg's dad. Greg was a good kid from a really good family. This is such a tragedy." -Robby Gordon

"Gosh ... Robby and I just had the time of our lives with Greg down in Australia. We played cards. We went to the beach. We had dinner. That's the loss of a family member, and that hurts." -Mike Held , co-owner of Team Gordon

"I feel privileged that I had the opportunity to be Greg's teammate the last two seasons. I had a great deal of respect and admiration for him, both as a professional and as a person, and I think every driver in the CART series felt the same way. It is a devastating loss and my heart goes out to Greg's family and the many people who were close to him." -Patrick Carpentier

    Rest in Peace, Miles Nelson

    Never forget, 'Mackie' was here.

quote from Jimmy Vasser that needs to be practiced by everyone:

"The thing I keep going back to is his passion. He had passion for his friends and he had a passion for life. He was always smiling. The lesson to be learned is that he taught us to be passionate, to love and not waste a single day of your life. Everybody knows he was one hell of a race driver, and ten times a human being."

    5 years that flew by.

The transformation is complete. The Indy 500 is the only IndyCar race that matters.

Remember, too, the pain that all who worked on his team went through. Greg was very well liked by those who worked for him, and his loss was devistating.

The guy in the pit-stop photo above, on the right, wearing sunglasses and leaning over the wall - that's my brother.
I ain't quiet, everybody else is too loud.

    A sad day of rememberance.

I recall how his crew marched out and tore down the pit. I can't imagine going through that.

    Rest easy, Greg.
