Something positive for Purdue BBall Fans

Quiz time, who said this at the annual basketball banquet and who was he honoring? After thanking teamates, assistants, fans, and cheerleaders, he begins with this -

    "I promised myself I wouldn't cry -

I would like to thank Coach. He's a wonderful man. I want to thank him especially for giving me a chance to earn a degree from a Big Ten university. I appreciate him giving me a chance to be a winner, a leader ... (then the tears begin flowing). Coach, you've definitely earned my undying respect and admiration. I hope you're as proud of me as I am of you. I remember being in the assistant's office one time and I asked Coach if years down the road if I was fortunate enough to have kids that I was hoping I could bring them back to meet him. The reason being is I'd like for my kids to meet the man who made me the person I am today. He's done a tremendous amount for me. "

"Even though we didn't give him that missing piece of the puzzle by going to the Final Four, he's got a piece I don't know if he knows he has: he has a piece of my heart and I love him very much."
Don't let your circumstances define you, let your vision define you.

It must have been either Ritchie Mount or Jeff Arnold.
    Natural Born Cynic

What irks me (maybe its too soon for the truth), DW was a 16-oval WIN specialist, yet the vast majority those boohooing for him, hardcarders & fans, alike are the same ones trying to kill anything with more than 9 deg banking & 4 corners, where Dan ultimately made his home...

Forgive me, but I don't recall Jeff Arnold.

I'd say due to the degree part, that would have to be Brian Cardinal then.

G-Rob went pro before his senior year and B. Miller stopped showing up for classes when his eligibility ran out (a friend of mine's wife flunked him).

I don't think Sheffler had a problem crying...

Jeff Arnold had a storied career at Purdue, the kind that ends up on the police blotter stories.

He and Gene didn't see eye to eye as Jeff was 6-9 amongst other things

Jeff played with the Stephens Lewis Mitchell crew for a few years, as I recall.

My favorite Jeff Arnold story was a pick he set in the NCAA's against "the Gators". I believe it was Vernon Maxwell that ran into Jeff and it knocked Maxwell out cold. Must be why he can't remember to pay his child support these days...

Dave Stack was another of Arnold's partners in crime. They were always in Gene's doghouse.

Jeff made the younger Scheffler look average in size as Jeff was a very visible weight room addict.

I remember now. I'll have to dig out one of my programs from those years to double check if I'm remembering correctly.

I heard Keady say that one of the most complete basketball players he ever coached was Mark Atkinson, from Brownsburg (I think).

    Ah, memories.

If you have an '88-'89 basketball program, I'm about dead center in the Kirby-Risk ad on the back!!!

I went through my "stack" of programs, and found a total of three! And only one from my years at Pudue. So that stinks! They were probably all contaminated with coffee and Old M.
I did save one from the IU game in 90. Chuckie White always rose up in those games!

If you were in the Kirby ad, you must have had good seats. How did you grab those? There were very few lower section student seats back then. I had seats in the nose bleed for four years, although I may not have always followed proper renewal procedures.

My favorite memory was when Illinois was ranked either 1 or 2, and Purdue upset them in Mackey. We all ran out on the court, and Dick Vitale was out there also, getting wound up and running around also. Somebody high fived Vitale, then hugged him, or put his hand on his head or something. This guy started high fiving everybody, saying "I touched Vitale's head!." It was pretty hilarious, and we all weren't totally sick and tired of Vitale at that point!
