It's a brand new day.
Yup. Twin 1.8 G4s. I've just got it about 3 months ago and can't get enough of it. I've a iBook and a Powerbook for about 3 years, all running the latest OS-X.Originally posted by nitrofan

Call me a retro-grouch, but the "classic" Mac OS has always worked fine for me, stable and functional. I feel no great need to upgrade, cool as it may be...

By definition, wouldn't a "MacAddict" have Mac OS X running on several of their machines?Originally posted by nitrofan

I have been thinking about getting the Mini.
Or trying the PC version of the OS (minus any proprietary Mac stuff), Darwin.
One driver's "fuel strategy" is another driver's "speed up or we will park you!"
I personally do not like the DOCK, but it is good stability![]()
i'm personally beside myself.
apparantly there's a bug with osx - if you don't upgrade the firmware to a certain level before upgrading to osx you have a ticking time bomb, and a machine that will soon be unbootable.
which mine is now.
the upgrade process DOES NOT CHECK for the firmware upgrade,
even though it's CRITICAL and will result in a DEAD MACHINE
if you don't do it.
I've had it with Apple.
When I bought this machine I had it in for service just after i'd had it for a year - twice . cost me over 300 bucks for a video card .
twice. yah that 's right twice. as in 600 bucks to fix a year old machine.
now i try to upgrade and this.
unbelievable.
I'm posting from my wife's IBM laptop now.
I think i'll be getting me one too.
That sucks - what sort of mac is it?Originally posted by nitrofan

it's not the firmware issue - which does stink, - but I think the power supply is fried. smells like it is anyway.
just seems like too many stories are out there of people who've tried to upgrade to osx from older supposedly capable machines and things start breaking.
i bought a power supply off ebay we'll see how it goes when i get it.
for all their quirks i love the macs. kinda like owning an old mg.![]()
did you try to reload os9 before it fried the supply?
Those things run pretty hot with their convection cooling. Did it have sufficient air flow? There wasn't anything left on top of the machine around the handle was there?Originally posted by nitrofan

I would only suspect OSX as a culprit here if for some reason it was causing higher CPU usage than normal and the machine was in conditions that were borderline for cooling in the first place.
Those machines weren't complete lemons but I've seen a few faults including video related issues from time to time.
Still decent little computers though.
hey guess what ?
mac is back
it was the hard drive.
got one off ebay for 50 bucks - a seagate 10.2 gig.
it sounds much more pleasant than the last one.
the fact that it died just after my upgrade was just a coincidence, which blurred the facts.
just a simple hard drive failure....
no big whoop
