It's been acting funky all day - it went out halfway through quals today, but is working ok for me now. Close it, go back to the home page and bring it up again ( I had to do that about lap 3 or 4).

Congrats Alonso.

Gret job Nick Heidfeld. Williams is looking good not great but good. My old team Jag now Red Bull is doing very well. Now I just need Mclaren to step it up and see Ferrari suck even more and I will be one happy man.
I was able to wake up to watch it, with the programme starting at 06.40 am.
Well worth watching. It's a breath of fresh air to see someone else winning again. The points scored in the competition are generally much lower than last year because most thought hat the reds would dominate again.
I only made it through qualifying.![]()
Just finished watching the race.
Renault is just looking spectacular so far.
Toyota looked much better this week.
Another good performance by Redbull.![]()
The Williams cars looked much faster this week.
Wish that JPM would have been a bit more competitive. Oh well he is in a good position points wise.
I HATE the new tire rule. Let them change the dang things.
The drivers really looked wiped out.
All in all not a bad race. There was some pretty cool passes on track. But they did get spread out there towards the end.

I love the tire rules.Watching driver's trying to push a car on blistered and fading tires, late in the race,is going to lead to some awesome racing towards the end.[I hope].
The engine rules though....................
...the spice must flow.....

The new tire rules have worked out very very well, they generated many the overtaking opportunities we saw today. Fisi's tires were baked when he and Webber tussled, and Rubens getting passed was down to his soft Bridgestones turning to dust.
The engines rules haven't been as bad as people guessed. The only engine failures today (IIRC) were from Honda, and they were the ones with fresh engines!

Then why have pitstops at all? Is it possible for the cars to hold the amount of fuel it would take to complete the whole race?Originally posted by jonovision_man

Sure it's possible to make a whole race tank, just a bit larger. The Maclaren a few years ago had a tank that came within 10 laps of going the full distance in Monaco (DC).
A tank that full would further degrade the tires, though, in the early stages. Heavy stuff. And obviously slow the car down. So as strategy it doesn't make a huge amount of sense, except maybe at Monaco.
jono
I don't mean from the point of strategy. Aren't these new rules to help lower the costs of F1? If so, then wouldn't it be cost effective to be able to get rid of or at least reduce the size of the extremely large pit crews?Originally posted by jonovision_man

No.. but only because the rules don't require them to at the moment.Originally posted by IndyIRLman

The fuel cell capacity has a big impact on car design so if you were to get rid of refuelling the rule would need to be announced before teams settle on their new car designs.
I suspect most teams have larger fuel cells this year because of the tyre rules leading to strategies where single stopping is more an option.
Although that engine rule stinks, this is shaping up to be an interesting year. Toyota appears to be making great strides, Williams is looking better, McLaren is bound to win one this year, and you know Ferrari will get back into the mix. They may not dominate, but Ferrari will help make things even more competitive after their new car comes out, IMO. But what a breath of fresh air from Renault, nice to see both of their drivers with a chance to win. Being an Alonso fan, I love it!

I found it strange that the pit crews are the same size as last year... and while 3 guys are refueling, the rest just squat there staring at the car.Originally posted by IndyIRLman

But my impression was always that the pit crews were otherwise occupied when they weren't chaning tires, ie. they are mechanics or have some role outside of the pit stops.

That is a very good point and could be true. I had not heard of that. I hope it is true because it seems like the teams could definitely save money buy dropping each pitcrew by about 30 people.![]()

My first Indy 500 was 1973, haven't missed one since 1981. To date I have attended 35 Indy 500's, and probably 100 or so other IndyCar races (CART & IRL).
They are. Steve Matchett's books give a rather detailed account of the mechanic's roll....pit crew and beyond.Originally posted by jonovision_man

There is a complete and separate mechanic and engineering crew for each of the two cars. This combined group also staff the pit crew. Matchett was a mechanic on the 2nd car (initially on the spare car), and rear jackman on the pit crew.

The pitstops do look strange but everybody is still getting used to the system and fine tuning the configuration of mechanics to deal with possible situations.
There is quite a variety of systems at the moment. Some teams have rattle guns at all wheels ready to go whereas others merely have a single man checking each tyre for condition.
I was surprised at the amount of wing adjustments we saw. That is something we never saw as much of with new tyres being issued at every stop as car balance wouldn't change over the course of a race.
