Thumbs up Get ready...new Journey CD, Tour coming.

Looks like Schon, Vallory and Cain and the guys are in cutting new tracks right now. I'm hearing it's gonna be similar to the best of the first old Journey, Pre-Perry and some other elements mixed in.

Neil Schon is a virtuoso so expect some amazing licks from him.

I can't hardly wait to join my geezer friends and new Journey fans at one of their concerts later this summer.

The excitement surrounding this tour is already amazing.

They've been showing a lot of old Journey videos on VH1 Classic lately. I heard a few years back that the rest of the Journey members couldn't wait for Steve Perry to recover from his throat cancer treatment some years back, so they fired Perry and hired another singer. As far as I'm concern, Steve Perry is Journey...

Everytime I hear of Journey, I just think of Rodney dancing on the course during Caddyshack...

I would much rather see the Clash reunite. Or Cocteau Twins. Or Dead Can Dance. Or The English Beat. Or The Jam. Or Throwing Muses. Or the KLF, for heaven's sake.

    Just my opinion, of course.

I'm with you. Journey sucks (Neal is a good guitar player, but their P***y ballads never showcased his ability)

I hear they are going to call it the "We blew all our money and need more Tour 2005" . .well if they were honest that is what they'd call it.

Steve Perry did for Journey what Michael MacDonald did for the Doobies, brought them huge record sales but ultimately ruined the band. That said, Journey made Foreigner sound like a garage band ... not that there's anything wrong with that.

If you want to hear Neal really play, you need to listen to him trading licks with Carlos Santana on the Santana III album. Also, he sounded great on the HSAS (Hagar - Schon - Aaronson - Shrieve) album called "Through The Fire", which might be a little hard to find nowadays.

OK. Can any of you Schon freaks advise on Abraxas Pool?

From what I hear, it's a Santana-esque, Schon/Rolie offering. If it's anywhere near the quality of Santana's early work (say '69 through '76) then I may just try and find/puchase this 1997 release.

I have this, but I haven't listened to it in so long that I can't give a recommendation based on memory. I'll listen to it again and report back in a day or so.

I seem to remember hearing that Carlos was not happy about that album coming out -- not sure why.

I have heard this and some of his other work with Santana, which was kinda my point. Journey ruined Neal for me, IMHO.

I think one of the problems was that the production buried most of his guitar work.

I'd pay to see that as founding member and lead vocal Joe Strummer is dead.

It would make "Should I Stay or Should I Go" a lot more interesting, wouldn't it?

I didn't know that. Hope he gets well if true. I wonder if he's going to have a Big Audio Dynamite return.

I listened to Abraxas Pool this afternoon. It is definitely influenced by the early Santana sound, which is not surprising given the band members:

    Gregg Rolie: Vocals and Keyboards
    Michael Shrieve: Drums
    Michael Carabello: Congas
    Jose "Chepito" Areas: Timbales
    Neal Schon: Guitar
    Alphonso Johnson: Bass

The arrangements of most of the songs are reminiscent of those found on the early Santana albums. Lots of great Latin percussion and organ parts. Rolie's vocals are the same style you're used to hearing from him. Included on the CD is a nice version of "Jingo", which starts out as a vocals and percussion arrangement before moving into a full band, Santana-esque sound.

Now to Neal's guitar parts. If you're hoping for him to replicate what he played on Santana III, you might be disappointed. He has chops now that he didn't have then, and as a result some sections of his solos are a blur of notes rather than displaying the slightly slower, more blues-based approach he used back then. I'm not saying it's radically different from his playing with Santana, but it is different. Another thing to note is his guitar tone and the production of the guitar sound. The tone generally has more distortion (almost a fuzz-tone), and the guitar sound is more processed (reverb, echo, chorus) than it was with Santana. Some of that is to be expected with the improvements in recording technology that have occurred in the last 30+ years, but I thought it was a bit overdone. It did remind me sometimes of his sound (though not his playing) with Journey more than with Santana. I would have preferred a more straight ahead, plug-the-guitar-into-the-amp-and-let's-play type of approach.

Overall, I think it's a good CD that's worth listening to if you're a Schon and/or Santana fan. Finding it, however, may prove difficult. I checked a few places on the web, and the only place I found it was Amazon. They had used copies starting at $30.99.
