Is the race advertised as a night race or a dark race?

What level of ambient illumination qualifies as dark.

BTW, the prior definition was from dictionary.com

a : an evening or night taken as an occasion or point of time <the opening night> b : an evening set aside for a particular purpose.

Of course we are using night as an adjective. so:

    Main Entry: 2night
    Function: adjective
1 : of, relating to, or associated with the night <night air>
2 : intended for use at night <a night lamp>
    3 a : existing, occurring, or functioning at night <night baseball> <a night nurse> b : active or functioning best at night <night people

    Main Entry: night blindness
    Function: noun
: reduced visual capacity in" faint light"(as at night)

Howard, I went back and checked. I filed my green flag report for that first race at 8:06, so the race must have started at 8:00, just 15 minutes later than this year.

I think the reason everyone remembers that race as being "in the dark" is because it had become completely dark by the time Stewart and Lazier did their lap-by-lap racing. That was pretty late in the race, because they both "blowed up" soon after that, just a few laps from the end of the race.

I really like night racing, but I think this is a really trivial thing to be displeased about.

Want night racing? Go to the Rolex.

Want ball busting open wheel to wheel action? Go to any IRL race...............day or night. Doesn't matter which.

    Stupidest notion ever.

Which brings us to broadcast night racing catch 22. For decent ratings any live televised evening event needs to have its broadcast in prime time (0800P-1100P for the east coast, 0700P-1000P for those of us who live in fly over country and the left coast folks are still outside grilling supper and remain temporally confused ).

The cure for enjoying a prime time event with plenty of darkness is to make it a 250-300 lap event. The race would end around 1000P then.

At least that is how the premier night racing series does it.

with those darn lights they have around the track, it will never be dark enough to call it a night race.

The thread you started about the tree in San Jose was equally worthwhile.

Of course, it's just personal preference, but I really enjoy the format.

There's a phase of the race when I realize the lights have come on, the reflections are starting to show on the cars and twilight is becoming night.

For me personally it adds to the excitement.

    YMMV

Someone should start a TF vs. hdolan forum. First topic...when does it actually get dark in Texas?

El Paso, Tx 6/11 sunset at 8:12 PM MDT

Orange, Tx 6/11 sunset at 8:17 PM CDT

Look closely, that is a 55minute spread (not 5 minute)

It would be like putting an "X" on the spot in the ocean where you caught the fish.

This is one of the most meaningful threads on this board.

It clearly demonstrates the IRL has solved all their REAL problems.

And I thought this day(nite) would never come.

I've met/read/listened to quite a few practicioners of "Good Old Day's Syndrome"....you know, the guys that think the 75 Steelers could compete in today's NFL, etc.

Dolan is an "Expert Practicioner" of the lost art of "Good Old Day's Syndrome" - one of the best I've ever encountered.

Richmond started at dusk and ended at night. What about the sportscar "night races" that start in the day-light and run all the way into (sometimes through) the night?

Texas is a night race. Without lights on top of the Speedway, they'd be unable to run it to completion. Therefore, no matter how much anyone doesn't want it to be, it is a night race.

One would be crazy to have a day time race in Texas at this time of year. It'd be 100+ in the grandstands with lots of humidity.

5:05 since I had to read your post too.

If we are going to quibble of such minor points like this (and at least HD is consistent, he's been moaning about this for years), how about that the title of this thread is incorrect. Abbreviations and acronyms are typically all upper-case, so shouldn't the abbreviation for Texas Motor Speedway be TMS not Tms. Just askin...........

Have we run out of things to criticize?

    This seems AWFULLY picky.

When I have attended this race I always thought it was cool that it started in the light and ended at night.
