    Took longer then I thought

for massive looting to start in New Orleans.
Some folks carrying diapers and food...others literally trying on jeans and shoes in the street for a good fit.

    Good Lord.

There's a fine line between civilization and anarchy in our large metro areas today.
I'm still waiting for the WASPs in LA to riot over the OJ verdict.

    I disagree.

There is a very bold and clearly marked line...

...the civilized help others--the uncivilized help themselves.

Mike Franklin stood on the trolley tracks and watched the spectacle unfold.

"To be honest with you, people who are oppressed all their lives, man, it's an opportunity to get back at society," he said.

(of course they weren't looting Wal-Mart, but a local shop, most likely owned by a neighbor)

Oppressed how? Whitey? Or perhaps a lifetime of poor choices?

For those that are looting and stealing water, food, ect.: I can't imagine what you're going through and don't know what I would do in the same situation.

For those that are looting and stealing jeans, tennis shoes, ect: please, get a clue. What exactly are you going to do with your ill-gotten goods.

When I saw them looting a supermarket, I thought the National Guard should be telling them "One basket apiece, please"- I mean, what good would frozen food be to the store with no power?
    But then there's this

Exactly. They are not getting back at "society", they are stealing from a person who happens to own a shop to earn a living for himself and his family.

Looting is not caused by poverty, overpopulation, or oppression, but is the result of a lack of character and morals in the person of the looter.

Why can't they just call it "stealing" instead of "looting"?

Then again, maybe the looters are merely expressing Ayn Rand's "rational selfishness".
No one is completely useless... you can always be a bad example.

Um, I think when I'm in this idiom, I sometimes get a bit, uh, sort of carried away.

At first, it was sugar-coated by the media by saying "they're just looking for food and water."

Before long, they were breaking into regular stores, stealing everything under the sun. Then, inevitably, it escalated into violence and arson. There's no such thing as "good looting," regardless what the roving reporters try to tell us.

Took the words right out of my mouth.
A classic case of throwing rocks at the neighbor's windows, while your house burns down around you.

    Total anarchy.

The biggest problem I see is that with all the bad guys out there it's really going to be difficult to help any of the good citizens, especially if it's too dangerous to go in there, which it looks close to becoming.

Well, there probably is very little left, and the ones that are doing it will be ill soon, so the problem may just take care of itself.

You don't think some of them were smart enough to realize this and steal anti-biotics, do you?

Unbelievable. At this rate, it will take the military to settle things down, and I don't mean the Louisiana National Guard.

This is starting to sound like mass insanity.

What I've been saying all day....

    Darwinism does work
But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security

Has anyone else noticed the high percentage of the persons in NO who are grossly obese? It's good to know that welfare and food stamps are working.

Everyone looks fat when they've got $500 bucks worth of stolen DVD's stuffed in their shirt.
