Who is the worst college/ pro coach to win a title?
And which sport lends itself to these fluke titles the most?

"Foyt's mere presence is a punch in the face, an inoculation against milquestoast corporatism. There wasn't a car anywhere anyhow anytime that Foyt wouldn't put the boot to, and there hasn't been a race devised he couldn't win."

Bob Knight.
INCOMING....
Jimmy Johnson at Miami
Jimmy Johnson at Dallas
Honorable mention: Bob Knight
The coach of the Michigan B-ball team in '89. Didn't the head coach quit right before the tourney.
Jimmy Johnson's replacement, Barry Switzer, at Dallas.
It's pretty difficult to build a team and be a lousy coach and win a title. Inheriting a great team makes the job easier.
It's a Hoosier thing, you wouldn't understand...
Midtown is referring to Steve Fisher.
Did Guy Lewis ever win one? If so he's a candidate.
I laugh at those who submit Bob Knight...

Tough to compare the sports but I'll try to do it sport by sport:
NBA: K.C. Jones (although that's harsh, he did win twice but considering all the basketball IQ on that team it's fair.)
MLB: Joe Altobelli
NFL: Brian Billick
NCAA Hoops: Steve Fisher*
NCAA Football: Lloyd Carr* (*sorry Wolverine fans, the teams were still great though)
I think pro sports lend themselves to more flukes than college. Since Brian Billick has won a title, I'd guess I'd say the NFL is the most fluke ridden.
NFL
-John Gruden (in the right place at the right time)
-Brian Billick (many, many reasons)
NCAA-hoops
-Steve Fisher
BRAWNDO - THE THIRST MUTILATOR...IT'S GOT WHAT PLANTS CRAVE!
I always thought that Steve Fisher's title & 2 other championship game appearances in a 5 year span will always be one of life's unexplained mysteries.
I like the Altobelli mention. For me, it was unbearable watching Bob Brenly Forest Gump his way to a WS title.
Whilst checking for confirmation re: Guy Lewis + title, I found this interesting site (Guy for HoF).
btw- answer is "no."
For the NBA, I'll go with Paul Westhead.

Wow! Nice call.
An unbelievable FunFanFact: 6 players from the '84 team and 5 from the '86 went on to coach in the NBA.
84: Ainge, Bird, Buckner, Carr, Johnson, and McHale
86: Ainge, Bird, Carlisle, Johnson, and McHale.
I don't think Guy Lewis ever won one. Jimmy V. beat him in '83.

He (Lewis) did not.
Final Four in '67, '68, '82, '83, and '84.
My pick would be Phillip Fullmer at Tennessee.
Barry Switzer and Brian Billick without a doubt.
Is it May yet ?
Pete Carroll.
He had Norm Chow call his offense. Carroll calls the defense and it looks like from the basketball scores they have. USC has to outscore people 50-42 to win games.
Carroll was mediocre at New England.
Hey, call me a sore loser but don't you think it's fishy when he can turn a dormant program like USC into a powerhouse in less than two years? USC's been caught with its hands in the cookie jar before--i.e. NCAA rules violations. Me thinks the same thing could be happening now.
To get into USC, you supposedly have to have high academic achievements. You can't tell me Reggie Bush or Lendale White's a Rhode's Scholar.
"To get into USC, you supposedly have to have high academic achievements. You can't tell me Reggie Bush or Lendale White's a Rhode's Scholar."
Let's not forget the starting QB's academic load this semester of 3 hrs of dance.
I have also been a bit suspicious of the University of Spoiled Children's quick rebirth. I would also like the NCAA to look at Ohio State. Anybody who admitted Maurice Clarett should be subject to an automatic investigation.![]()
