Because the number of people affected is equal to the combined cities of Chicago and LA.
Also more than the the combined state populations of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Montana, and Wyoming (something like that, it was on the news last night, but I'm not completely sure which states they were.)

However, the effects are isolated, at least to the point that the NYC local news could report it to just about everybody who is affected.
It's news, no doubt, perhaps even worth mentions nationally. However, I can't believe that it's really the lead story nationally.

NYC, specifically Manhattan where they are located runs on mass transit. Most people don't own cars and some don't even have drivers licences. Without subways and buses, it becomes nearly impossible to get anywhere. I imagine it's pretty insane there right now. I'll have to call my brother and ask. So, if you're the editor for one of those channels after taking 3 hours to do a 30 minute commute while carpooling with people you hate and the prospect of doing it all over again later that day, what are you making the lead story of the day?

The reason it's a lead story is because the largest city in the nation is pretty much shut down. No matter how you cut it, it's a big story. Add in the fact that the strike might not even be legal, and there you have it.
I'm just curious, Ren, what you might think should have been the lead story?
I will say this, though. There are many times when things that happen in NY get way too much media play. I can remember times when they get snow storms that are always called "the storm of the Century" and only drop enough snow to be considered a ho-hum storm in Chicago and a dusting to those that live in Buffalo. But it's still "The Storm Of The Century."

Again, I believe the strike is newsworthy nationally. However, from a national perspective, surely it isn't as big as the Pennsylvania ID ruling.
Of course, I knew the answer to my original question: the mainstream media are very much self-centered on the Northeast and D.C., with some attention on the West coast and Florida.
The same reason it is Hillary's village. The availability of the media.
