If every bar band that ever did "In the Midnight Hour" paid royalties to Pickett, he probably could've afforded a brand new ticker.

My Mom used to say - Don't pick your nose, let Wilson pick it. Thinking of them both and chuckling now.

Another great one gone, thanks for the music Mr. Pickett.

They did a nice little tribute this morning on "All Things Considered." He was sort of a purist regarding the live nature of music.

...featuring local hero and former Blues Brothers Band member Steve "The Colonel" Cropper. Great piece.

He had the voice, Pickett did, even in the later years. Incredible.

Not to be "pick"-y at a time like this, but Wilson Pickett was most definitely NOT Motown. Pickett recorded for Stax Records out of Memphis with the great soul producer Jerry Wexler and backed by Booker T and the MG's (the band in The Blues Brothers; they were from Niles, MI, right across the border from South Bend, BTW). Also with Stax Records were Sam and Dave ("Soul Man", "Hold on, I'm Comin'"), Otis Redding, and Aretha Franklin (she recorded "Respect" while with Stax, which was written by Redding).

Where Motown soul was smooth and "cleaned up" for white audiences, Stax soul was unapologetically funky and greasy, just like good soul food.

Good clarification sf-indy fan. The only thing I would add is that "Motown soul" is an oxymoron.
