Wallace takes new commentator role full throttle

He's heading to Roger Penske's IRL shop in Reading, Pa., to scrutinize every inch of a Dallara-Honda.

He chatted up IRL IndyCar stars Danica Patrick and Dario Franchitti about their high-tech cars while killing time in the pits at the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona.

And he will take a spin in the real thing during an IRL test next month at Homestead-Miami Speedway, running 200-mph laps just to get a feel for open wheel.

Good for him!

I think this actually slipped under the radar a bit more than it should have, he could certainly attract some NASCAR faithful to check out the IRL and maybe vice versa. Him taking a spin in an IndyCar will make various news broadcasts and racing-related web sites I'm sure. Especially if he stuffs it into the wall...

I think it was offered more as a tribute to the Indy Car drivers, in its original context:

Rusty Wallace drives fast every week in the NASCAR Winston Cup series. But there's nothing that would persuade him to drive an Indy car.

"These guys generate some serious horsepower," Wallace said. "I wouldn't get out of an electric chair to get in one of these things."

Wallace attended his first IRL race a day after finishing 13th in a Cup race in North Carolina. He watched from the pits of his car owner Roger Penske's open-wheel team, which included race winner Gil de Ferran.

Maybe you're right - the Janet Jackson Super Bowl deal resulted in huge fines. In fact, the government fined the network more than they did for the 2001 coal mine accident that killed 13 which says a bit about our country.
