Art Pollard 1927-1973
We lost Art Pollard today in 1973 in an accident at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Race in Peace Art.
Ironically Art tutored Swede Savage during his rookie orientation period and they became friends. Only to loose both within days. God Bless them.
Yes, I was there that day and will never forget it. He organized a picnic for the kids at the LaRue Carter mental hospital at the track each May and I remember thinking how cool that was for him to do. RIP.
I was there as well. It was in that particularly dangerous era of Indycars, engineers had come up with a ton of speed and not much in the way of safety. Big wings, big tanks, huge power. Man those cars must have been beasts to drive.
By all accounts Art was a great guy. He's not forgotten.
