Witnessed Mario's "Miracle at Indy"...Watched 3 win their 4th Indy 500...Was there for Petty's 200th win...Saw the last Novi qualify
Thoughts & prayers to his friends & family -
1963, my first 500, at age 15.
Sat in the bleachers inside turn 3.
Len had a mechanical failure and parked it in the grass in front of us.
He stood against the chain link fence in front of us and watched the race while talking to a yellow shirt. He also gladly autographed hats, tickets, and programs.
My first 500 has so many memories. IMS for the first time, the Novi, Parnelli, and Len Sutton top the list.
RIP
wasnt he the driver anaylist with Sid Collins in the early to mid 1970's?

Len was a driver anaylist for WFBM TV 6 Trackside with Tom Carneige in the 60's and early 70's. What a concept, 5:30 to 6pm everyday, live track reports. I watched Trackside 6 religiously as a kid.Originally Posted by Burnout

I use to live in Oregon. I'd pass thur the Portland airport there were these posters of Oregon sport heros and one of the posters was Len Sutton. I told my stick and ball friends about INDY and the Champ Trail and how rough is was to be a race driver "in the day". Every time we'd pass though the corridor I'd point out Len's spot to them. I'd also quote Ernest Hemigway's remark about how there are only two sports in th world. Auto racing and Bull fighting. All the rest are mere sports. God Speed Len!
A rookie the same year as AJ!
GOD SPEED LEN...
May you race in peace.

Sorry I duplicated your post. A little computer glitch on my end.
Another driver out of the glory days of American open wheel racing and another hero from my youth. Sympathy to his friends and family
I never met him in person, however my dad did know him. Len and I have had a number of emails and a phone call or two over the last few years and I felt he was a friend. A nice man.
I saw him race a whole bunch of times. Not only in Indy cars, but in REAL champ cars, sprints, and even midgets. On page 36 of Len’s book, MY ROAD TO INDY, is a photo of him getting the trophy for a win ay Raceway Park in Blue Island, Ill in the #57 Hardwood Door Roadster. One of the prettiest midgets ever built. I was there that night, I am somewhere in the background of that photo.
I and my dad are going to miss him.
