    Week 16 NFL musings

    1. The Colts are dead. Put a fork in them. Their problems are not all injury related. Their defensive system is severely flawed. Would they be in better shape with Mike Doss, Bob Sanders, Montae Reagor and Corey Simon in there? Absolutely (especially with a healthy Sanders, who is about the only physical player that defense has). But, they would still be below average (instead of 32nd in a bunch of categories). They are WAY too small to stop anyone. Ron Freakin' Dayne gets 150 yards against them? I think the Texans could have put a high school kid back there and gotten 100 yards against them. They can't tackle. They can't force turnovers. They can't play when they fall behind early. Average offenses can do whatever they want (run or pass) against them. They may sneak out of the first round of the playoffs (because they are at home). But, after that...... Peyton is going to have to score every time he has the ball. And, as good as he is, that ain't happening.

    2. Maybe in this year's draft, instead of drafting WR's, TE's and DB's early in the draft, Polian might want to draft some D-lineman or LB's. Just a thought. (Unless, you like watching the Colts starting guys on defense that weren't even drafted or were castoffs from other teams). And no more 250 pound D-Lineman and 210 pound LB's. That ain't gonna work.

    3. Speaking of dead, Tom Coughlin and Jim Mora will be at this time next week. Both have done HORRIBLE jobs this year and deserve to get the axe.

    4. BTW, Jim Mora Sr. was right about Michael Vick (and he is far from the only one out there that thinks it). He is a coach-killer. The only chance Atlanta will ever have with Vick at QB is to put him in a shotgun offense that takes advantage of his athletic skills. If they don't do that (full-time), Atlanta has no chance with Vick as their QB. No chance.

    5. Was Mike Shanahan still wrong? The kid QB from Santa Claus will be playing in the playoffs in 2 weeks. And, it won't be long until the kid is playing in the "Big Game".

    6. Hey Merrill Hoge, you still think Vince Young will be a huge bust that shouldn't have been drafted in the first 4 rounds? I think "Hodgy" has taken a few too many shots to his cranium to continue on as a football "expert". Some of his beliefs are laughable.

    7. The Giants traded Shawne Merriman, Philip Rivers and Nate Kaeding for Eli Manning. This might go down as the most one-sided trade in a long, long time. Eli has the look of a guy who would rather be sitting with his Mom and Dad in a suite watching Peyton play than playing QB in the NFL. Of course, he is the one that demanded to play in New York, so he gets no sympathy from me.

    8. Who is the worse executive? Matt Millen or Isiah Thomas. Its a tough one, isn't it?

    9. Steven Jackson has over 2000 all-purpose yards this year. With all the talk of LT, Jackson's year has gone largely unnoticed. He is a tremendous football player.

    10. Can anyone actually admit they actually watched the Browns/Bucs showdown this week? Unless you had relatives playing in the game, why would anyone have watched this one? And, did they really need HD for this stinker? It didn't make either team any more watchable.

Not close. The Destroyer of Worlds, I mean, Zeke has got Matt covered. Whereas MM has failed at one position, Isiah has failed at *several* executive positions.
The trait they share is a cockroach-like ability to survive. It defies logic.

Well for Zeke it's those child like dimples.

On the home front, the Cardinals kept their record streak intact. It took them to the 15th game, but they sent a quarterback to the hospital.

Jay Cutler picks his receiver in the huddle then locks onto him two steps into his five step drop. How is that going to work against the cerebral Patriots?

Does anybody in the NFC aside from the Eagles and Packers want to be in the playoffs?

The Bears were awesome in September, too bad the playoffs are January. Mindful of last year's disaster, the Bears should get through the division round, but then they'll probably get the explosive Saints. The Saints to the Super Bowl is reminiscent of a Sliders episode.

Passing may be king, but you still have to run to win. The owner of the leagues worst rushing attack (Detroit) will be picking first in the draft.

Teams headed in the right direction: Buffalo, Tennessee and perhaps the Packers.

Should Jay Gruden, Joe Gibbs and Romeo Crennel be fired?

Jay (or Jon) will survive for another year. I just wish they would make him bring a real general manager (instead of one that does whatever he says) and bring in a offensive coordinator (for all the "offensive mastermind" talk, the guy has had a p*ss-poor offensive team for the majority of his seasons as a NFL head coach and NFL offensive coordinator). He is steadfast loyal to his beloved "west-coast" offense, and that loyalty will probably end up getting him canned eventually. Its dink-and-dunk, ugly, take-no-chances football at its worst. And, the fans in Tampa are getting tired of watching it (and tired of watching him basically ignore the defense in the past few drafts). That Super Bowl trophy is only going to buy him so long. If he doesn't get near .500 next year, and his team doesn't start to put up some points (with all the offensive draft picks the team has used recently), Chuckie will be gone.

Snyder would never fire his "hero" Gibbs. Gibbs, IMO, should have stayed retired and kept running his stock car team, but he came back for one more shot and at least got them to the playoffs last year. He will probably stay one more year and walk away.

Crennel has only had 2 years, but is Cleveland in any better shape now than they were before he got there? Nope. They still are undisciplined. They still have major QB issues. They still have no identity and no real reason to pay attention to them. Some guys are just better as coordinators (and better with Belichick running the show). Romeo probably survives for another year. But, the Browns will have to show marked improvement next year, or it will be so-long Romeo.

As of right now, I say Arizona, Atlanta and the Giants are looking for new coaches next year. And, Parcells is no lock to come back to Dallas (especially if "The Player" is still around).

I don't like the Titans but have said for a while I like the way they are rebuilding that team. Give them a young, big play WR that Vince Young can connect with and they are going to be tough for a while.

I have been a lifelong Packer fan. Hope Favre comes back for another year but it is time for them to figure if they have someone to replace him. Jennings looks like their next big play WR, out of James Lofton, Sterling Sharpe, Donald Driver mold.

I agree Matt. The Titans already have some nice, young smaller-type WR's, but they need a big, physical, move-the-chains type WR for Young. Maybe they sign a veteran free agent that fits the bill (they have a TON of money under the salary cap for next year). They also have 2 good young TE's (Scaife and Troupe) that (if they can stay healthy) will be big players for them as well. They are in real good shape on offense for the forseeable future.

With the Jags (still with a good young core of players on both sides of the ball) and the Titans, the Colts will have their hands full in winning the AFC South next year.

I haven't seen all of the Packer games but from the games I've seen they need a tight end.

What's especially bad about the Texans' pick was that both the brains and the hearts of the fans knew it was wrong when it was made.

Tennesse is probably doing too well this season to draft Jarrett or Johnson, in some ways a victim of their own sucess.

They'll still be better next year though, especially if LenDale gets in better shape.

No kidding. How long will it take for someone to realize he is not a West Coast QB?

Detroit and Houston have gotten a call for the worst front office. I can't let that go without nominating the Bidwells and sadly Al Davis as the worst owners in the NFL.

The MNF booth is rippin' on Pennington quite a bit with the arm strength thing. I think it has been mentioned about 2000 times so far.

I'm a little late getting to this thread, but I gotta disagree with you and say that MOST if not ALL of their problems on defense are injury related. Besides Freeney, the guys you listed (I'll also throw in Bethea and Jackson who have had a stint on the IL as well) are the best they've got (or had)--and if you hadn't noticed, they were not playing in Texas on Sunday. You can't pin it all on the scheme, because you have to have the right play-makers in there for it to be successful.

Of course, letting Larry Tripplett and especially David Thornton go might be what really cost them. Gardner has not played the way they thought he was going to.

The only chance the Colts have in the playoffs is for the offense to score first and build a 10-14 point lead early. That's the only way for the defense to be able to play to their "strengths".

Super Bowl prediction: San Diego wins over Chicago.

But the good news (if you can really call it that) is that the Colts WILL get to the AFC Championship game. San Diego with LT will be too much for them though. And the Bears beat the Saints, but barely.

To understand that requires the understanding of how the TEAM concept is stronger in football than any other sport. The missing players played very important roles in the Colts' defense whether their stats reflect it or not.

Also, notice that the teams that have won Super Bowls for the last, oh, several years are not tops among the Notable Quotable lists.

The Best do their thing. The Rest need to tell everyone what they're doing (or in most cases, going to do.)
