    Roger's first Championship Drive

Saw that USAC is planning a tribute to Roger out west in February, so i pulled up his stats today.

Not to many guy's go out winning their last ever race, but Roger 19 years after his debut at Langhorne took the checkered flag in first at Milwaukee. Granted, it was 1979 and the usac/cart split, but a victory none the less.

My prized photo is a 12 year old me along with Roger sitting on the pit wall during practice at MIS, when he drove for Hopkins.

Everything came together in 73 with his championship run. I think he only DNF once.

Sam Hanks comes to mind. Ray Haroun also.

Add Gil De Ferran. Won Indy his last season. Won Texas his last race.

I was at Milwaukee for that win. Couldn't have been more pleased had GB won (who I was really rooting for.) I'll have to look for the picture now...taken through the fence, but you can see Roger on the victor's stand waving.

I couldn't help but notice in the referenced PDF document that this was the last ever race for another legendary driver.

Yep, that was the Arizona Cowboy's last ride. And that's all the needs to be said about that race.
