Johnny used to come out to Nashville every so often. I think he was involved with IRP back then, but his son Matt was our flagman for at least two or three years.
Matt used to do this neat little routine where all the cars would line up single file on the parade lap, then he'd kneel down on the track and point to each car as it approached him and wave them to their respective rows. He had to come off the ground a couple of times as I recall to avoid some jokers who tried to dust him, but it usually came off looking pretty cool.
WTMT...ahhh, yes. They used to broadcast our races live each night, or rather highlights of most of the show and the "featured" race was live. It was pretty neat. The voice was a fellow named "Lean" Dean Metcalf, who was quite a nice guy and a great voice. He and Frank Scott would do a weekly call in show on Thursdays, IIRC, which was well done and got a pretty wide audience. I was on the show a couple of times myself, usually when an open wheel show came to town, because I was the guy who knew who all the USAC and AAMS drivers were. I got to interview Tom Bigelow over the phone on the air once. Pretty neat for a guy who was about a year out of living from the back of a pickup...
RW: come on out and see our show. We'll put you up in The Bunker!
Indyguy: Yes, I certainly do know Robert Watkins, and I'm sure he remembers me too...he was kind of the be-all do-all at LMS, much like Jody McKenzie at MCM, the guy behind the scenes who never got a lot of credit for what he was doing but without whom the track couldn't function. If he wanted to, he could probably run any racetrack in the country. Not sure what he's doing these days, I keep hoping once I get my page up I'll hear from him and the Ford brothers and more of our fellow "red shirts".
