    Reds Thred - 2007

    Here it is.

Position players will be reporting to camp on Thursday with everyone else.

Will the Red Legs improve on last year? Is the organization coming together? Will Ren Butler take the day off work for opening day to watch on TV with his cat? Will I actually make it to a game this year?

These are the questions TF Reds fans want to know.

Heck no! It will probably be just a half day.

SI.com's Final Analysis on the Reds...

The Reds have components of a contending team, with a couple of high-impact hitters in Dunn and Griffey, exciting young talent in Phillips and Encarnacion and workhorse starters in Arroyo and Harang. There just doesn't seem to be enough there to overcome everything the Reds lack.

Here's a nice story about Josh Hamilton before the Reds picked him up:

    O/U on Griffey's Games Played?

    I give him 92.

How about Griffey admitting how he broke his hand in December. Wrestling on his yacht with his son. Is there any over/under for the off-season?

What will Adam Dunn have more of this year, home runs or errors?

MB is premature, it is too early for baseball
Call me in about 2 weeks
I do hope the Reds are competitive again this year, it made the time until football season last summer go a lot faster.

I think we should have a Reds Forum.

    Make it so!!!!!

For that matter a Colts Forum, etc. Probably best to stick with OT, right?

Speaking of the Reds and thread, I think that the new uniforms are a significant upgrade from last year. Still not as classy as those of the Buckeye State's other major league team, but close.
Some fans claim one series or another runs "real race cars." What's everybody else running, fake race cars?

The typo ("thred") makes it cool, punk. But you wouldn't know anything about that, Mr. "Wears Socks With Sandals."

Fthe Reds, they canned Steve Stewart for Marty's boy and I don't like that. I will not listen this year.

    I'm sure they'll miss me.

I'll get my info on the Reds from Tracy Jones Extra Innings on 700 WLW.

It looks like it is. Also, there's some hat company leading the way or and MLB-wide thing going on with the black arch over the ears. I really like the way it makes the hat look.

I think that's part of the newly integrated HANS device.

On a related note, Great American Ball Park is installing SAFER barriers on all the walls for Ryan Freel.

With that in mind, who do you look for to start in the OF? Also, do you like movies about gladiators?

Hate the new caps. But then, I'm one of those dinosauer traditionalists you often hear about who also hates the DH, wild cards, artificial turf, and using the word "hat" when you mean "cap".

On paper the pitching staff looks stronger than it did a year ago.....and it had better be because the "swinging" (I hesitant to say "hitting") order, again on paper, looks somewhat anemic with the loss of Aurilia, Kearns, & Lopez. Not a big Jason LaRue fan, but his replacement, Chad Moeller, doesn't inspire me. I also need to be convinced that David Ross and Brandon Phillips can back up their '06 performances. That said, remembering the Tigers unlikely run of last year, I'm hoping for the best and can't wait to get back to Great American Small Park when there is no racing conflict.

The cap pictured is the batting practice cap, which has been a standard MLB design for several years now (the one pictured represents a new style introduced for 2007). While the game caps are going to be made out of polyester this year (instead of wool), the construction and design will remain the same. The look of the game caps will be completely unaffected as the caps will be made of polyester cloth, instead of mesh. I saw a picture of the new game caps in the USA Today earlier this week and couldn't tell the difference. I will post a picture of the new caps if I find one.

EDIT: Here is the article, with pictures.

After seeing the BP hats on some guys, I'm not sure that I'm a fan of them. They look odd over the ears...

Also, here is a quote from an article on Joey Votto:

But in 2005, Votto struggled at Single-A Sarasota. He hit .256 with 17 homers and 83 RBI - not bad, but not a step forward.

Votto blames it on the rules then-GM Dan O'Brien mandated for minor-league hitters. All hitters had to take a strike before swinging.

"As a baseball player, I like to have it in my own hands," he said. "I know a lot of these guys do. I felt like they were trying to take my game away from me.

"It was almost like a personal attack. It was something everyone had to deal with. It was a struggle for all of us."
Has anyone ever heard of a mandate from a GM regarding taking a strike for ALL players in the minors? Very strange. Maybe that happens more often than I know, but it seems to make no sense to me. I think I would be offended as well.

Is the 11-man mound making room for Josh Hamilton? I guess we'll see...

I also saw on TV where George Costanza has come up with new uniforms made of cotton.

As for Hamilton, I REALLY hope they keep him. I think I've made that pretty clear on previous posts...but I cannot help it. I feel good about his future and I want it to be in Cincinnati.
