Developers drop proposal for NASCAR track in Washington

By JENNIFER BYRD / Associated Press

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Sponsors of a $368 million NASCAR race track proposal for Washington State abandoned their efforts Monday after encountering stiff opposition from local officials and resistance at the state Legislature.

NASCAR slinks back to Florida without our money

    By NWProgressive.org

NASCAR goes creeping back to Florida, where they can eat possum and put washing machines on their porch while whistling at their young daughters in cut-off jeans, free from the burden of Washington state taxpayer money.

Which is why I'm moving out of here and to Florida next year when I retire.

    The proposed site was ridiculous.
And I don't blame the legislators for holding tight to the purse strings.
The second article...well, you only had to see where it was coming from and smile wryly at its point of view. Definitely mis-labeled by the thread starter as the "local" take.

It didn't even make the cover of the Seattle PI Sports section. 5 clicks past the front page...

    Front page/
    sports/
    "other" sports/
    motorsports/
    article.

The Seattle PI went with the AP article oviously. It's not like they'd spend money to cover it.

The Olympian went with the AP article too...

I loved the PNW when I lived there.

Hey, if the tree huggers in WA don't want a speedway, fine.

I'm sure Bruton could use their date for a 2nd race at Las Vegas.

AND....the date reserved for Staten Island would be welcomed by the fine folks in Nashville, or the region around Kentucky Speedway.

In a perfect world there would be one race at each track and the season would be over by Labor Day.

Nothing "mis-labeled" or misleading about it; I have a good friend that lives in the area & that IS the local take.

I am not on the left, but I get tired of the way-too-large vehicles folks drive around here. Hell, even the lefties around here drive extended cabs or Hummers.

In a perfect world, I could go to races 52 weeks a year without getting on an airplane.

How wonderful if such open-minded folks completely ran our country. What class acts....

But it's still it was good to see a government not allow a ridiculous handout. This coming from a lifelong NE Wisconsin resident who's nose is still out of joint about the Green Bay Packers going on the government dole to get a stadium renovation. My season tickets are just an investment now; the voucher goes straight to TicketKing.

I didn't really get Nascar's thinking on this from the outset. I grew up in Western Washington...NOTHING is guaranteed about the weather. Sure, statistically speaking, the second week in June would be the prime time to hold an event that depends on dry weather...statistically. However, there have been years when it has rained for literally weeks on end.
Put the track over by Cle Elum, or better yet, in Eastern Oregon, right off of I-95. The people in Oregon actually seemed to WANT a race track there.

Consider this setback and the Staten Island fiasco as reality checks for NASCAR. They sat back and decided what markets they needed/wanted to be in and felt that they would be welcome with open arms. Hello! Had NASCAR/ISC done their homework they would have known about the opposition in Washington and about the unbelieveable amount of time and red tape, not to mention cost, that it would have taken to build the New York track. ISC needs to realize that they, in the eyes of state and local governments, are less than stellar corporate partners. They bring congestion and a less than stellar crowd with them and ask the government to put up huge chunks of money while they reap the profits. Time for young Brian France to rethink the proposals to new markets.
