    Chavez congrats Milka

    Interesting...

    http://www.rnv.gov.ve/noticias/?act=ST&f=5&t=47156

CITGO support Bill Clinton for his presidential campaign in the past?

    Chávez about Citgo:

Previously, the Citgo company supported entire teams, but American (...), also supported baseball teams, even supported the presidential campaign of (Bill) Clinton (...). We have supported Milka and you'll see that her car takes the Citgo name, because it is our company "

I like 'ol Hugo. What he had to say last Fall at the UN was about on the mark.

I am not a socialist, but I can certainly see it as a legitimate "developmental stage" form of government for emerging third world nations. Sadly, for Venezuela, however, it really does not apply and is totally inappropriate. In that regard, I dislike the man and his motivations.

Overall, though, I could not have agreed with him more last Fall. And he read Noam Chomsky, one of my favorite writers. "Hegemony or Survival" and "Chronicles of Dissent" are fantastic reads. I also suggest "Understanding Power."

Hugo Chavez may not be my political cup of tea, but I liked that UN speech.

Forty-three had it coming. And what gasses my can, now the weenie may turn to the UN with his tailtucked for helpout of Iraq!

Hugo is currently financing a Danny Glover movie. I'll bet it will be a movie that will cast the US in a 'less than favorable' light.

Hugo Chavez should be the worst of our problems. For Indy and the US in general.

Sorry Count, I respectfully disagree with you on this one--on all counts (bad pun intended). Hugo is nothing more than Fidel with money. He even "nationalized" the oil reserves like his hero did back in the 50s now is buying arms from Russia, threating to sell US jets to Iran. The fact that he also conveniently and intentionally finds ways to side with US advisaries (Iran, China, Russia, etc.) only makes him that much of an "a-hole" in my opinion...but I respect the fact you "liked his speech".

None of those US oil companies drilling in Velenzuela are supporting Indycar racing.

    NONE

So thanks Citgo and Hugo for picking up where good ol' Corporate America leaves off.

Much of Latin America's goverment is a shameful disgrace. The poverty is hideous and without compare in our hemisphere. Many places to point the finger, but one stands out...corruption!

What is Chavez doing to help the (different kind of poor than we know in the USA) poor in his country? How are the "regular" folks in Venezuela doing? Will any of the "regular folks" be attending the 500?

I think this might be the wrong place to pump up Chavez.

    Promoting the national oil company.

    You asked.

Why are political topics not in the Current Events forum? Or will this question be ignored again?

Trying to sell gasoline in a proud country, where he just called the President "The Devil Himself" in front of the United Nations...yes, he probably needs some "promotion".

You are correct Bruce, in that, this thread belongs elsewhere, because the sponsorship is 100% political.

Because the monitors haven't picked-up on it. Have you tried reporting this thread?

    There is your answer.

I don't much like what the Exxon Valdeze did to Alaska but I don't hold it against Penske's Cup team

The all history about venezuelan controversy...By wikipedia

On 27 September 2006 the 7-Eleven chain of convenience stores announced its 20-year contract with Citgo was coming to an end and would not be renewed. 7-11 Spokeswoman Margaret Chabris said "Regardless of politics, we sympathize with many Americans' concern over derogatory comments about our country and its leadership recently made by Venezuela's president. Certainly Chavez's position and statements over the past year or so didn't tempt us to stay with Citgo." Later she said that "People are making it out to be more than it is."[1] Citgo's Chief Executive Felix Rodriquez accused 7-Eleven of exploiting the situation to score political points against Chavez by pointing out that the decision to terminate the contract had already been made back in July.

Chavez continued to make controversial statements despite his government's ownership of a firm which was heaviliy dependent on U.S. consumer support. In January 2007 he was quoted as saying "Go to Hell, Gringos" in response to criticism from the U.S. government regarding his decisions as Venezuelan president.[2] Chavez has stated he will enact reforms to make Venezuela a socialist state, including nationalizing the telecom, electricity and natural gas sectors.[3] Perhaps in an effort to mitigate the damage to its image from being associated with Chavez, Citgo launched a national ad campaign in the fall of 2006 emphasizing the company's corporate social responsibility[4]. National television ads also aired through February 2007 featuring ordinary Americans thanking Citgo and Venezuela for providing discounted heating oil to low-income people.[5]

Ever use the "report to a mod" button, Bruce? That's how to report something.

The last time I checked, this thread was about Milka and her sponsor. Since the conversation has turned, I think we can move it out.
