    Remote control car starters

After years of getting into freezing cold cars (leather seats - “ Whooooo!!!”), Mrs ‘3’ and I are giving ourselves a gift of a remote control car starter. There are lots of them on the market. Do any of you Forumites care to recommend one that you’ve had good experience with?

    Thanks in advance.

If you do a little research and buy a higher end brand of starter you shouldn't have any problems, from what I recall the ones made by alarm companies tend to be of high quality.

The starter is only as good as the people who install it, which is the real issue. If it's a fairly new vehicle, you can often go to the dealership and get a remote starter put in, it's more expensive than aftermarket but if the work is botched you have a State Attorney General's office, and they are factory designed. A lot are as simple as snapping into the wiring harness.

If not, find a reputable 12 volt car audio/alarm/etc. installer in your area and have them do it.

Try to get a factory unit. When the aftermarket starts hacking around in modern automobile wiring, you have no idea where the problems will stop. I've had it on a demo, but will not install it on my own cars, since there is no factory kit.

I was thinking about getting one and finally did it last Friday
    I love it

I was wondering if I would need line of sight or exactly how strong the signal would be but I can be upstairs at home, hit the button and go downstairs and outside to find the car getting warmed up.

I probably paid too much but I feel comfortable with the company that installed it, I got the car starter and remote key lock together and I got a second one for my spare key.

It is nice to leave work and hit the starter and get the car starting to warm up as I walk over to the lot also.

I went to Zeibart, they had a special with $50 off right now, not sure how long that lasts

If I had done just the 1 (not the second for my back-up key) and accepted having to carry a second keyfob(sp?) around just with the remote on it, it would have been $250

Upgrading to having the remote key lock and remote starter on same keyfob raised the price to $311 or around that and then getting the second one for the second set of keys made the final cost $370. They asked if I wanted to upgrade higher for increased car security system, I said no as I expect to only have this car another year or two.

Zeibart provided a lifetime warranty. Car sounds really good firing up.

Again, I suspect I could have found a system for less but I am comfortable with what I paid for and it has been just a few days and I don't believe I did not do it sooner and we really haven't had a cold day yet.

Every remote control car I have ever owned just has a little slider switch on it somewhere....

I ended up going to my trusted, local garage and they bought one and installed it for around $300 and change. Not even sure of the make. But it's great.

Make your kids go out and start it. Then it's free.
