Back in the old days, I drove the 67, my ex drove the 68. the California plates were 525 BMW, and 524 BMW. Both were light green. Freak out the troops at the gas station.
We bought a house in Fullerton, Ca a long time ago. 1500 W Maxzim St. 1500 was the first real BMW after the war.
Phone number, just the way it came, was 525-2002.
I was a BMW parts manager for 10 years, drove B Sedan, crewed on an IMSA 1600, as well as the Hyde Park Motors BMW's.
So then I left California, started driving Toyota's, came back to Illinois, working at Chrysler Corp dealers. Been driving a Neon, wife has a Caravan. Also usually had a demo.
So last winter, we started talking about buying a car. I thought a Dodge with a Hemi might be OK, since I can't stand FWD. So I drove one to Milwaukee and back, etc.
So one night, she said, "What would you buy if you had your choice." 15 seconds, I said BMW. Bought the 525, used at 47K has a service contract, and BMW maintenance. Now has 58k. The only problem I've had is the ticket I got on I 57 yesterday. 88 in a 65, but had just dropped back from 119. Had to clear the Garmin before the trooper got to the car!
To put in another way, I am 62, have been in the car business all my life, in the back end. If you want a Sports Sedan, BMW invented the whole thing. If you want a sofa on wheels, buy a Buick!

1995 525i, 1995 M3, 1998 Z3, and 2001 X5. Two were mine, two my wifes. Care to guess which?
I loved all three, but the one consistent problem was cost of repair. BMW's are great in warranty, and not particularly problematic afterwards, but every little thing seems to be 2-5 times what you would have guessed.
That being said, my next car will probably be a BMW. I sold my last one in 2005, and have regretted it.

If you've never driven an E34 540 it's difficult to describe. It pulls like a bigblock, handles like it's on rails, and rides smooth as a magic carpet. Without a doubt the finest car I've ever owned.

I usually keep cars for about 8 years. Clean the paint and wax twice a year. My 98 A4 looks almost new. My girlfriend thinks it's her car.

I've heard the new ones are very gadget-intensive, particularly the iDrive system which is often called "intrusive." Back in the '90s I dated a girl who had a 328is, and I liked it. But I don't think I would like one as much that obscured that elemental connection between the driver and road in the name of gadgetry.
Of course, in a straight line my Mustang thinks BMWs are yummy.

I don't know where that stretch is, but it kinda looks like parts of I90 between Bozeman and Billings. (I don't think that pic is Montana though because there would be mountains in the background in that area at either end of the highway. Otherwise the terrain is similar.) In Montana I would only go as fast as I saw the cops going (in their Hemi Chargers). So 110-120 or so was good.

When this photo was taken, the dark pavement on this stretch of Interstate 10 in West Texas was 11 degrees F warmer than the light pavement.

Had 6 of them to date, and they're excellent for the most part. Except for the one that burned up and the one my son totaled. Not a good idea to have one that is out of warranty, as has been noted. Also, unless you get some options, the current ones are bare bones and cheap feeling inside, especially the 5 series, which I just cannot bring myself to like. I've been tooling around recently in a 330xi with some wood trim and a couple of packages - it gives you the feeling that there is nothing it can't do.
The 135 coupe showing up in the Spring is going to be tough to resist.
I too had an Uncle in the Battle of the Bulge. And one who flew B-24's to Germany 30 times. I've had no negative reaction driving BMW's, but I will assure you they drove the Buick's and Cadillac's.
I think I see a trend here, and think it reflects my feelings.
Do you really appreciate a car, and are willing to pay for that, or is it just transportation.
Are you a Driver, or a motor vehicle operator.
I live in Germany. And I must say thet the Autobahns are not all that big wide and smooth as evrybody in America makes them out to be. Probaly half of them around here are even 3 lanes. Which leads to another problem. The trucks here are electronically limited to 55 mph. So even more exciting than driving at 100+mph speeds is the HUGE braking episodes one has every few minutes when sombody pulls in front of you and you are going 60mph faster than them.
Also, I love driving over 130 and would do it every day. But try this in America and you can see whats it is like. Next time you drive do not take you car out of second gear. Drive aroud between 5000 and 6500rpm all day. It just seems so brutal to my cars. Altough rental cars are different stories.
With the wife and kids in the car I have a self imposed limit of 100mph except when passing, maybe short bursts to 125 or so.
