As head coach? This year was all about HEP, don't link Lynch is the right guy to lead IU to bigger and better things.

    I don't think he had a choice.

    The timing is interesting though...

Maybe getting someone who failed at Ball State is the best Indiana can do for a football coach

It is hard to imagine that if you take Hep out of the equation that Lynch gets the job on his own merits. He was doing recruiting for IU under Hep and last year's recruit class was ranked second to last in Big 10. Reports are this year's class will be dead last. Maybe having the coaching position finalized and beating Purdue plus playing in a bowl game helps get a recruit or two but it is awful late in the process.

I would have hoped IU could have done better but maybe they couldn't.

I hope Greenspan does not have a long term mortgage down in Bloomington because if anything else comes out on Sampson and the football team returns to the 3 or 4 win seasons (their non conference schedule is so weak right now they virtually have to win 3 games) I think Greenspan goes down with the recent coaching choices he has made.

And McRobbie, so easily given blanket support to the decisions, could find the athletic program an anchor that brings him down.

Lynch? Well, there could've been WORSE choices. However, with all the Coaching changes going on this year SO FAR, I think I'd have waited a bit to see what other choices would be available to me. I know he wasn't the right choice for Arizona State, but I would've chased "Dirk Koetter" now O-Coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars. ASU fired him at the end of last year. He's a former "Boise State" Head Coach, that actually put Boise State on the map! He LOVES College Football and I think he could've been hired for a "reasonable amount of $$$", especially with NO $$$ to pay to the previous Coach. (not meaning to sound crass). Koetter's the kind of guy that'll sling the ball openly and DARE the Defense to try to STOP him! He'd be the kind of Coach that can bring them out of the doldrums they're in right now.
    But that's just my opinion!

At this point, you have to reward the guy for getting you there--or being the guy in the coaching position when they "got there." Is Bill Lynch a candidate for any other head coaching position in the upper tier NCAA Div 1-A schools? Nope. But letting him go now would be a mistake--even if he cannot follow up to the season IU has had this year. IU is in no position to pick up a big name coach or even an up and coming coach. It will take consistency to build the program and I'd say that Lynch is the only hope. If they can ride the momentum for a season or two and then build on what they have, they may pull out of the depths of the Big Ten.

Hep was the PERFECT coach for IU. He wanted to build the program and stay the course. I'm not sure if they can find anyone like him.

Cam Cameron might be available soon?

That's what the basketball team did with Mike Davis.

I would have preferred giving someone a chance who, a) hadn't had a chance in D-I football yet, but has been a coordinator of a succesful program and might be able to bring that success to IU or b) a coach who has had some success coaching in the D-I or D-IAA level.

The IU job is a very difficult one. To succeed there, a coach needs an innovative mind (to overcome talent deficits) with preferrably plenty of charisma (to aid in recruiting). Lynch has neither. With Hardy leaving, and OSU and UM coming back to the schedule in a couple of years, IU will be back to 4-7 or 5-7 in short order.

    I hope I'm wrong.

Yes, but let's be realistic. IU is not going to get a Nick Saban, Kirk Ferentz, Urban Meyer or Bobby Stoops.

I'm beginning to think that for most schools, three or four years is the limit. Win NOW or get fired. Or in the case of Joe Tiller, what have you done for me lately?

What about June Jones? Or Todd Graham, who in his first year, coached Rice....RICE, to it's first bowl game since 1961 last year. He is now 9-3 in his first year at Tulsa, including beating BYU (and he runs the spread).

I don't mind a "lesser name", but let's at least look at a guy that has had success at lesser schools.

IMO, Indiana finishes 9-3 this year with a good coach. Lynch was a decent caretaker, but I don't see him as the dynamic individual to take this program to the next level.

As TD points out, I think we just entered a Davis-like scenario at IU, where the next 4 years are spent in slow decline.

    I hope I'm wrong.

    .
I'd love either (or Kelly at Cincy or Johnson at Navy) but IU refuses or is unable to pay the type of money required to get one of those guys. Jones, Graham, and Johnson are making north of $1,000,000. Kelly makes north of $800k. They aren't going to take a pay cut for a very difficult job.

It's pretty clear to me that IU is not serious about competing in the Big 10. They are simply interested in hiring on the cheap (20% under the 10th highest paid Big 10 coach), getting the same 30k or so suckers to pay their money a few Saturdays a year, and cashing in on the TV and bowl money riches that Big 10 members are guaranteed.

At least the tailgating is fun.

Following Knight with Davis and then following Davis with someone who had a record and a name... and now Hep's assistant following Hep.

Makes me think this Greenspan dude is a tad lazy.

As pathetic as Indiana has been, it would still give him an infinitely better chance to win the national championship (IU was a better program than Missouri, Kansas, Louisville, and Kentucky not that long ago) than Hawaii.

That kind of thing may or may not motivate him. I tend to doubt it, but if IU was serious they would at least gauge interest that successful coaches with innovative offenses in sub-BCS conferences might have.

The problem though is that IU doesn't have the cash (or won't pay it) to give raises to coaches from places like Hawaii, Tulsa, Cincinnati, Navy, etc. etc. etc.

As long as that's the case, there's not a chance in Hades Jones leaves Hawaii. The best IU can hope for is an up and coming assistant (still probably too salty for IU's budget), an older coach that has toiled in the minors looking for a shot at the BCS world (like Hep), or a guy that failed in the MAC that no other BCS school would have touched with a 10 foot pole (Lynch).

Which stinks, because that means matt, TD, and I are probably right (and we don't want to be).

    Yep.

Why compete when the absolute best you can finish is Eighth? How frustrating for Jones. He runs the table - and everyone else loses at least one, most two, and he still has no chance in hell.

If IU would just up it's salary to respectable levels, would could nab plenty of these quality mid-major guys.
